Trichomoniasis

What is it?  Trichomoniasis or "Trich" is a condition caused by a protozoan — a microscopic, one-celled animal. It is a common cause of vaginal infections. Up to five million Americans develop trichomoniasis every year. Only rarely do men have symptoms. Sometimes women have no symptoms. It takes from 3-28 days for symptoms to develop. Condoms offer very good protection against trich. Spermicide offers some protection.

How is it spread?  Trichomoniasis is spread through vaginal intercourse with an infected person. Testing for Trichomoniasis is done by microscopic examination of vaginal discharge.
Symptoms may include:
frothy, often unpleasant-smelling discharge
blood spotting in the discharge
itching in and around the vagina
swelling in the groin
urinating more often than usual — often with pain and burning

How is it treated?  Drugs called 5-notroimidazoles are successful for both partners.
