Medication Abortion Services at Planned Parenthood
of Connecticut
Planned Parenthood of Connecticut offers both surgical
and medication abortion options at our health centers.
Medication abortion ends a pregnancy using medications
rather than surgery. In September of 2000, the FDA
approved the use of a drug called Mifepristone (also
known as RU-486). A woman may use Mifepristone
during the early part of pregnancy– no later than 56
days after the first day of her last period. This is
confirmed by ultrasound.
Mifepristone is a pill that the woman swallows. It works
with another medication called Misoprostol. Mifepristone
blocks a hormone that is needed to continue pregnancy.
The woman takes the second drug, Misoprostol, one to
three days after taking Mifepristone. She takes the
second drug by mouth, or she can let it dissolve between
her cheek and gum. She takes the second drug at home,
where she can make herself comfortable.
Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract. The
contractions cause the pregnancy to pass out of the
woman’s body. The majority of women begin to cramp and
bleed soon after using the second medication, and the
pregnancy is often passed within 4 hours. The cramping
is occasionally intense, and the bleeding may be heavier
than her period. A follow up visit is needed to confirm
the abortion is complete. Medication abortion is about
95% effective at ending an early pregnancy.
Our agency is committed to offering safe and effective
pregnancy termination options to women who choose
abortion. All of our health centers offer pregnancy
testing and options counseling, including prenatal and
abortion referrals.
