Infection Diagnosis and Treatment at Planned Parenthood of
Connecticut Planned Parenthood's health centers often get calls from women and men who are concerned that they may have an infection. Before you read about what you can expect to happen at an infection check up, check out these facts: Infections can be very common You can develop an infection even if you have never been sexually active Sexually transmitted infections often have no symptoms You can have more than one kind at a time Most infections are very easy to cure You can walk in for testing and treatment - no appointment required! If you have an unusual discharge, your normal discharge has changed, or you notice a change in odor, you may have an infection. Infection symptoms can also include pain with urination or feeling the need to urinate more often than usual. You should come in as soon as possible. Having an infection can be very uncomfortable and we want to help you feel better quickly! When you come in, the receptionist may ask you to fill out a health history. This helps us know if you are allergic to any medicines, for example. Depending on your symptoms, the medical assistant or clinician may take your temperature and have you leave a urine sample. The clinician will ask you about your symptoms and whether or not your partner is having any problems as well. Often the clinician needs to take a sample of your vaginal secretions (if you are a female) and look under a microscope to discover what is causing the infection. She/he may also suggest other tests, depending on your symptoms. Once the clinician knows the cause of the infection, she/he will give you medication to help the infection go away. The clinician or medical assistant will tell you how to use the medication and will give you written instructions to take home. If you are sexually active, some infections can be passed to your partner. Often your partner will need to get medication too. This will stop the infection from coming back to you from your partner. Planned Parenthood can give treat your partner too – often they won’t need to have an exam to get the medication. If you or your partner need treatment, call your local health center.
