Who Provides Your Medical Care at Planned Parenthood of Connecticut?

The person who does your exam is a nurse practitioner, physician assistant or certified nurse midwife. All three have slightly different schooling but all provide the same care at Planned Parenthood. All three have passed a national exam and are certified by a national nurse practitioner, physician assistant or certified nurse midwife organization. All three professions have their own state regulations to follow and are licensed by the state of Connecticut.
At Planned Parenthood of CT, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified nurse midwives are collectively referred to as clinicians. They all follow the same Planned Parenthood guidelines when providing care to our patients.

Nurse Practitioner: A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse (RN) that has advanced nursing education and training in a specialty area. Nurse practitioners at Planned Parenthood are mostly adult, family or women's health nurse practitioners. All have advanced training and experience in providing women's heath care regardless of their specialty.

Physician Assistant: Physician assistants are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. They receive their training to provide medical care in specific physician assistant programs. Physician assistants who work at Planned Parenthood are interested in providing women's health and have advanced training and experience in women's health.

Certified Nurse Midwife: Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses who have advanced nursing education and training to provide care to pregnant and non-pregnant women. Certified nurse-midwives are trained to deliver babies but do not do so at Planned Parenthood. Certified nurse midwives have experience in providing women's health care.
Many of the above mid-level clinicians are also trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating men with sexually transmitted infections.

All Clinicians at PPC are trained and licensed to provide many services including:
