¡Vaya Ya!: Striving for Positive Outcomes in Latina/o Youth

When it comes to making decisions about sex, many teens feel caught between their own wants and the expectations of their families. For Latina/o youth, the cultural conflict between family messages and media pressures only adds to the struggle. Migdalia Belliveau, of the Hartford Health Department, and PPC Trainer Raisa Negrón facilitated this examination of Latina/o family structures and reviewed strategies to help Latina/o youth bridge the gap between tradition and contemporary norms.

Activity: Icebreaker "Tic Tac Toe"

Note: An icebreaker is a warm up exercise: its purpose is to get the participants juices flowing and anchor themselves in the group.  An icebreaker also grounds the facilitator as well as their audience.

Materials: (located at the end of this page)

Tic Tac Toe grid

1.  Pass out a copy of the Tic Tac Toe grid to each person.

2.  Find someone in the room.

3.  Ask their name and one thing they love about their job.

4.  Ask them one question from the Tic Tac Toe grid.

5.  Have them sign their name under the question they answer.

Continue steps three four and five with other people in the room, asking different questions from the grid.

When you get three signatures in a row, you’re done!
